Sung Hi Lee was born on April 1, 1970 in Eun-Pyung Gu (Gi-Ja Chon), a borough of Seoul (South Korea). At the age of two Sung Hi's parents divorced, leaving her and her younger brother to be raised by her grandparents. In 1978, she and her brother moved to Chicago to be with their father. Her father, an alcoholic, was very strict and provided his daughter with seven successive stepmothers. He wasn't much of a support to Sung Hi financially either - she graduated high school with honors and a scholarship to college, but because of lack of money in the family she had to abandon school for work. She waitressed in Chicago, Houston, Dallas, Washington D.C, and Columbus. It was in 1988 at a Dallas nightclub where Sung Hi was discovered by her future agent Jim Whitehead. In 1991 Sung Hi enrolled at Ohio State University and spent three years in an exercise psychology program. One day, she threw away her dream of being a doctor and left the university in favor of full-time modeling in New York.
Though Sung Hi has striking looks, her height was insufficient to walk the runways of New York, so she headed off the Los Angeles. At that time the first photographs of Sung Hi appeared in Playboy's Book of Lingerie. Playboy boosted her popularity, but in 1995 Sung Hi got a bigger break. She participated in the Hawaiian Tropic Beauty Contest (representing Korea) and she came 3rd. This impressive finish in the contest led to her appearance on advertisements for Hawaiian Tropics, Sunkist Orange Juice, Chrysler Plymouth, and Hilton Hotel.
Sung Hi Lee's modeling career has since taken off. The calendar producing company East Meets West even bought the rights to Sung Hi's picture for an annual calendar!
