Penelope Cruz was born and raised in Madrid, Spain. Since she was very young, Penelope has had a keen interest in the arts, particularly dance. At 14, she decided not to continue with high school, rather to focus her energy on dancing. A few years later, she moved to New York and took four years of Theatre training.
Penelope's first break into Film and TV came at the age of 17 when she was cast in Jamon, Jamon and then Belle Epoque. It's very likely you haven't heard of these films - as they're Spanish - but Belle Epoque won nine awards in Spain and an Oscar for Best Foreign Film. Penelope steadily became more and more popular in Spain to the point where she cannot leave home without being hounded by the media and adoring fans. Still, very little was known of her in the mighty American film industry.
Finally, North America became aware of the Spanish star after her role in the English film, The Hi-Lo Country, in 1998. If English audiences didn't catch Penelope in The Hi-Lo Country, they had another opportunity to catch her as a barmaid in the Spanish-British film, Twice Upon A Yesterday. American audiences also had the opportunity to catch her in Spanish film Todo Sobre Mi Madre (All About My Mother) - the film did a wide release in North America with English subtitles. Next year, All About My Mother took home the Oscar for Best Foreign Film.
Americans couldn't get enough of her. Penelope's english wasn't very good, but as it improved the American job offers started pouring in. You've surely heard of her starring in Woman on Top, All The Pretty Horses with Matt Damon, and Captain Corelli's Mandolin with Nicolas Cage. The tabloids have also been starring Penelope Cruz, as she's been seeing a lot of her Vanilla Sky co-star, the post-Nicole Kidman Tom Cruise.
